The Bergen Railway

Ride one of Europe's most Spectacular Railways. The Oslo to Bergen Norway route is a must for rail fans and lovers of beautiful scenery.

The video above: A 10 minutes taste from the total 7 hours long travel from Bergen to Oslo by train, through some of the worlds most beautiful scenery.

The Bergen Railway, or Bergensbanen, takes you on a spectacular journey through the winter sports resorts of Geilo, Gol and Nesbyen - up Hallingdalen to Finse and Hardangerjøkulen glacier. On the descent to Voss, the landscape opens out and the journey ends in Bergen, with its fish market, seven mountains, culture and history.

Friday November 27th in 2009, over 1,2 million Norwegians watched parts of «Bergensbanen» on NRK. The longest documentary ever? At least the longest we (NRKis The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) have made, almost 7 1/2 hours, showing every minute of the scenic train ride between Bergen on the Norwegian west coast, crossing the mountains to the capital of Oslo.

Bergensbanen is 100 years in 2009, and the documentary was a wild idea from NRK staff that came through, and was, surprisingly, a big success.

"You run out of superlatives. The trees changing color, the water running along the route. The smoothness of the train. The awesome mountains. The quiet of the ride. Spectacular. I must take this before I die."
